Podcasts you should be listening to | International Podcast Day

International Podcast Day

We’ve put together a few of these blogs over the years, being avid podcast listeners, and they mostly center around public relations and professional podcasts. International Podcast Day was a few days ago, so it’s fitting for us to highlight some of our favorites— both serious and some that just keep us sane. PR in the technology industry can mean hours and hours of writing complex content, so taking a mental break is always needed. With that in mind, here are some podcasts that we recommend at EMG:

For work
I know I just said we were going to focus mainly on non-work podcasts, but we have to discuss a few. Keep up with industry trends with the PRovoke Media Podcast, which discusses all things public relations related, as well as social and cultural news. Another one to hit subscribe on is an old favorite, PR Week, hosted by Steve Barrett and Frank Washkuch. PR Week talks to industry professionals and PR and marketing professionals, offering thoughtful insights in each episode.

For learning new things
They say you’re never too old to learn something new, and there’s no time like the present to start. Especially over the past few years, many of us have taken up new hobbies we didn’t have time for before – from baking bread, to gardening and DIY projects. However, there’s so much out there to learn. One podcast that seeks to educate one episode at a time is Stuff You Should Know (SYSK). SYSK is for the listener who wants to know more about anything and everything – from composting and MRIs, to fireflies and numerology.

If you are looking to stay up-to-date on the financial state of the world, or just want to learn something new, NPR’s Planet Money has been finding creative ways to talk about the economy since 2008.. Another educational podcast to consider is Dear Bob and Sue: A National Parks Podcast. Based on their book, this podcast is hosted by Matt and Karen Smith who share their adventures, tips and best practices for exploring our national parks – perfect for those outdoor types.

For staying entertained
Okay, on to the fun recommendations. Unsurprisingly, we have a few true crime fans at Eclipse Media Group, so we have to give a shout out to a few. First up is Crime Junkie, which if the name doesn’t give it away, is a podcast for those who love to know more about notorious crimes, as well as those that don’t get enough media attention. Another crime related podcast is one that introduced many of us to podcasts in the first place – Serial. Although it’s been a while since they released a new season, this investigative podcast is still one of the best. Moving into more lighthearted territory; if you’re a fan of the television show The Office, then you might also love the Office Ladies podcast. Hosted by Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kinsey (Angela), these ladies take a deep dive into the behind-the-scenes action and their reactions to each episode of the show.

Although we’re celebrating International Podcast Day with these recommendations, consider this our PSA to take a break from the grind of daily work and life and give one of these podcasts a listen. Everyone should make it a priority to learn some new skills, keep up on industry news, or unwind with some true crime.
